Triumphant Return: Quasi Drummer Bounces Back from Devastating Injury | Music Feature
Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss, the enduring forces behind the band Quasi, are scheduled to perform on Sunday, July 21, at Club Congress in Tucson. The duo’s impressive 30-year journey has been marked by perseverance, especially through Weiss’s high-profile collaborations with bands like Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag.
Recent circumstances added a new chapter to their story. In 2019, Weiss faced a severe car accident that jeopardized her ability to drum. Despite the setbacks, she approached recovery with determination, practicing daily with Coomes.
“I broke both of my legs and my collarbone,” Weiss recalled. “Playing drums became the best therapy. Sam and I started practicing every day, and he brought incredible new songs.” This rigorous practice led to the creation of their latest album, “Breaking the Balls of History.”
They chose to keep the instrumentation simple with only keyboards and drums, aiming to capture a live-performance energy. This minimalist approach led to productive sessions and eventually caught the attention of Sub Pop Records.
Their new album, produced by Quasi and John Goodmanson, was recorded at Rob Lang Studios in Seattle. Released in February 2023, the album’s twelve tracks have since garnered significant attention.
During the pandemic, the duo continued to practice, fine-tuning their music. Weiss noted, “We played every day for three weeks to prepare for recording.”
The success of their latest work has taken them on tours across the United States and Europe. Weiss expressed excitement about connecting with audiences, stating, “We want to have a special, unique experience with the people.”
Reflecting on their new music, she added, “In rebuilding, the new songs were written quickly and were really good. We’ve tried many different things in our ten records. Now it’s about being direct and raw.”
Quasi’s latest album also includes singles and videos showcasing a playful style while exploring profound and esoteric themes in the lyrics. Coomes continues to lead the lyrical process, often finding inspiration in unusual places like the bath or a walk.
Looking forward to the upcoming tour dates, Weiss is optimistic about the future. “We’ll play old songs, new songs, maybe a cover or two. It should be a good time,” she said, grateful for her regained strength and fitness.
“I feel strong and in shape,” she concluded. “I’m not 100% perfect, but I’m good enough to play at the level I want.”
