'Violent' child abuser was ‘hallucinating’ when he bloodied his wife, baby: cops

A man has been charged with child abuse after allegedly slamming his wife’s head into a dresser while she was holding their baby, resulting in the child being dropped and injured.

Police arrested 28-year-old James E. Harrison on Friday on felony charges of child abuse and child endangerment, as well as a misdemeanor charge of assault, according to a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa.

Authorities responded to a residence on West Elm Drive in Rancho El Dorado after Harrison’s wife escaped to a neighbor’s home and called 911, expressing fears that her husband was harming their baby.

The victim reported to police that while she was holding their son, Harrison violently grabbed her head and began ramming it into a dresser. This caused her to drop the child, who also sustained head injuries.

Officers forced entry into the home and discovered Harrison on his bed, behaving erratically and hallucinating. He was claiming that his knee had disappeared, although he was visibly moving both legs, the police report noted.

Police suspected that Harrison was under the influence of a substance, noting his oscillating behavior between calm and violent.

The wife and child were taken to a hospital in Chandler. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed. Harrison refused medical evaluation by Maricopa Fire and Medical responders.

Harrison has been booked into the Pinal County jail and could face more than eight years in prison.
