‘Same faces, new beginnings: Cancer Association members part ways with Havasu Community Health Foundation | Local News Stories’
Recently, the Cancer Association of Havasu faced a major shakeup as Founder Evie Cistaro, along with the entire 19-member committee, announced their departure. Concerns over the Foundation’s management of donations have been mounting among the members, prompting this drastic decision. Cistaro, who started the organization in 1999 following personal experiences with cancer, expressed her heartbreak over the situation. Throughout the years, the association has hosted various fundraisers in Lake Havasu City to support cancer patients with screenings, counseling, and financial aid.
Initially under the 501c3 Havasu Community Health Trust, the organization later transitioned to the Lake Havasu Community Health Foundation. Over the years, the foundation has expanded to encompass multiple charity organizations catering to different community demographics. However, recent allegations regarding financial discrepancies have created tension within the Cancer Association.
Ember Van Vranken, an attorney with CHDB Law, raised concerns about the foundation’s allocation of donations, pointing out discrepancies in the financial statements. Despite assertions from the foundation’s executives that they honor donors’ intentions, doubts remain among the association members. Efforts to mediate the situation by council member Jim Dolan have so far been unsuccessful, leading to the decision for the Cancer Association to sever ties with the foundation.
While Cistaro and the committee were initially met with resistance in their attempt to transfer the charity to a different 501c3, they remain determined to continue their mission under a new entity. The departure of the committee from the foundation raises questions about the future operations of the Cancer Association in Lake Havasu City. Despite the challenges, Cistaro and her team are committed to serving the local cancer community and addressing their needs.
