Teen shoots, kills another teen then kills self in Tonto Basin, officials say

Authorities are investigating a tragic shooting that occurred in Tonto Basin, Gila County late Saturday night, involving two teenagers. According to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place in a remote area, raising serious concerns about youth safety in the region.

When deputies and the Tonto Basin Fire Department arrived at the scene, they discovered both teenagers had sustained gunshot wounds to the head. Reports indicate that a 15-year-old male shot another male of the same age before turning the gun on himself.

First responders found one of the teenagers still breathing, prompting an airlift to a Phoenix trauma center. Sadly, the other teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members identified the injured teen as Colten Boyle, who ultimately succumbed to his injuries after being on life support.

Colten’s family expressed their heartbreak on social media, emphasizing their desire for him to be remembered as more than just a victim. They described him as kind, funny, and hardworking. A close friend, Brett Flaherty, echoed these sentiments, stating, “He’s just a good kid,” highlighting Boyle’s respectful nature and passion for rodeos.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s database confirmed Boyle’s death on December 1. The identity of the other teen has not yet been released by authorities.

Preliminary investigation findings revealed that a group of seven individuals, aged 15 to 20, were present during the incident. Notably, only one person in the group had not been drinking prior to the shooting. Further details about the shooting remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.
