The shooting happened at a home near Bullard Avenue and Waddell Road in Surprise on July 26.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — A West Valley teen was killed in an accidental shooting on July 26, according to Surprise police.

Police reported that officers arrived at a residence near Bullard Avenue and Old Oak Lane shortly after midnight on July 26.

Upon arrival, family members directed officers to a bedroom where the teenager, a male, was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

Efforts to save the teen’s life were made but ultimately were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the teen accidentally discharged a firearm while mishandling it.

A GoFundMe has been created for 17-year-old Chris Burphy Jr., a Willow Canyon High School graduate and former basketball player, who passed away in the incident.

Though police have not officially identified the teen due to his juvenile status, they provided information confirming Burphy’s death when queried by 12News.

According to the GoFundMe page, Burphy was planning to enlist in the Marines upon turning 18 in November.

Since its creation on Sunday, the page has raised over $7,000. If you want to donate, click here.
