Shocking Discovery: Tempe Man Stored Father’s Body in Freezer for Four Years to Save His Home

TEMPE, Ariz. — Joseph Hill Jr., a 51-year-old resident of Tempe, has been arrested following the discovery of human remains in his freezer, according to local authorities. He is charged with concealment of a body, a class 5 felony, and failure to report a death, a class 2 misdemeanor.
The Tempe Police Department initiated the investigation after receiving a tip on October 22 regarding the remains. Officers approached Hill, who resisted allowing them to inspect the freezer at his residence. He disclosed that his father had died at home four years prior, yet records indicated that the father, Joseph Hill Sr., continued to receive social security benefits after his reported death.
Upon obtaining a search warrant, investigators searched Hill’s property and discovered skeletal remains in the freezer. The identity of the remains has yet to be confirmed. Court documents reveal that Hill had purchased the freezer shortly after his father’s death, wrapping the body and placing it inside. When questioned about not reporting the death, Hill expressed fear of losing his home due to not being on the deed.
Hill mentioned intentions of burying his father on land near Strawberry, but stated he was unable to do so due to the presence of others in the area. Neighbors reported that the house had been vacant for over a year following a fire and expressed shock at the discovery. One neighbor commented, “It’s unbelievable, it’s shocking and unexpected. This is where we walk around with our kids, so it’s not something I think would happen.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities encourage anyone with information to contact the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311. Callers can remain anonymous.
