Arizona State Senator J.D. Mesnard is drawing attention to the financial struggles of his constituents as inflation continues to impact everyday life. In a statement last week, he emphasized the burden placed on families under the Biden-Harris Administration, referencing a report from the Common Sense Institute’s Arizona Inflation Misery Index. The index indicates that Arizonans now need to spend an additional $9,996 annually, while households require almost $25,000 more each year to maintain their pre-2019 quality of life.

“I’ve heard from citizens across Arizona just how difficult it’s become to make ends meet,” Mesnard noted in the Senate Republicans’ weekly newsletter. He advocated for fiscal responsibility, asserting that government should not overtax citizens during challenging economic times. “That’s why I’m pleased Arizona Republicans banded together to implement the largest tax cut in state history for our citizens,” he added. Currently, all income taxpayers are benefitting from a 2.5% flat tax, and Mesnard expresses optimism about potential further tax relief in the upcoming legislative session.

As he seeks re-election in Legislative District 13, which includes Chandler, Gilbert, and Sun Lakes in the Phoenix metro area, Mesnard faces competition from Democratic nominee Sharon Winters. First elected to the Arizona House in 2011, he served two years as Speaker before winning a Senate seat in 2018. The district has proven to be a competitive battleground, with only a 1.6% difference in vote share between Republicans and Democrats over recent elections.

Mesnard is calling for continued support, claiming his experience as a husband, father, professor, and small business owner equips him to tackle Arizona’s economic challenges. “We face historic economic challenges that require someone with the right experience and a track record of success to navigate,” he stated, urging voters to allow him to continue his work in the Senate.

The outcome of the November election could significantly influence party control in the state legislature, where Republicans hold slim margins in both the House and Senate.
