Memories flooding back

Maricopa’s history is vividly captured through a photograph taken by Patricia Brock in 1946, showcasing the unpaved Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. This image offers a glimpse into the past with the Richfield Service Station, the forthcoming Texaco Service Station, prominently positioned in the center. To the left lies the DeHart homestead, a significant site as the DeHart family were pioneers in the region. Notably, their residence served a dual purpose as a U.S. post office in its early days. Rhoton’s Store can be spotted on the right, marking the end of the street where Napa Auto Parts would later establish its presence.

The conditions of the unpaved highway were challenging, often washing out during winter storms, spring rains, and summer monsoons. As a result, high school students relied on bus transportation to Casa Grande until the mid-1950s, showcasing the community’s resilience.

Brian, who joined the InMaricopa team in October 2020, began as a multimedia intern. His initial tasks included organizing files and documenting local events through photography. Following his graduation from Maricopa High School in 2021, he transitioned to a full-time role within the organization. Starting as a dedicated photographer, Brian’s responsibilities evolved in October 2021 when he shifted to writing, focusing primarily on public safety stories. Currently, he is furthering his education at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. When he’s not writing, Brian enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the natural landscapes around Maricopa.
