In a moment reminiscent of historical turning points, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs faces a challenging political landscape as 2024 approaches. A recent column by Laurie Roberts of the Arizona Republic named Hobbs as the “Biggest Loser” in Arizona politics, a designation that reflects significant losses in the legislature.

Roberts critiqued Hobbs for her inability to gain control of the Arizona Legislature. Instead of achieving a favorable outcome, Hobbs lost two seats in the House and one in the Senate. As a result, she now confronts one of the most conservative legislatures in recent history, a development that could severely hinder her agenda.

Amidst this backdrop, Hobbs’ approval rating has plunged to a troubling 36%. The increased Republican majority in both houses raises the stakes for the governor, intensifying scrutiny on her administration. Additionally, Hobbs is reportedly the target of two separate criminal investigations, and a primary challenge looms, which could further complicate her political standing.

Citizens for Free Enterprise Press Secretary Dan Coulson highlighted Hobbs’ precarious situation through a social media post, underscoring her declining favorability and the challenges ahead in a rapidly changing political climate.

Roberts suggested that Hobbs may be branded as “out-of-touch” by Republican opponents, particularly as Donald Trump’s administration looks to solidify GOP gains in Arizona. The strategic focus appears to be on expanding the House GOP majority, potentially targeting vulnerable Democrats like Rep. Greg Stanton, who won his seat by a narrow margin.

The gubernatorial race is expected to draw considerable attention from national Republican organizations, as Hobbs’ challenges may become a focal point in broader electoral strategies. As Arizona’s political landscape evolves, Roberts’ characterization of Hobbs as the “Biggest Loser” paints a stark picture of the governor’s current standing.

In essence, it seems Katie Hobbs must navigate a perilous path, one that may define the trajectory of her governorship as 2024 unfolds.
