Eli Crane Dominates Jonathan Nez in Hotly Contested Rural Congressional Race
Republican Eli Crane appears to be on track for a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, leading Democratic challenger Jonathan Nez by 12 percentage points in early election results for Arizona’s Second Congressional District.
As of the latest counts, Crane secured 56% of the vote compared to Nez’s 44%. This district, the largest in Arizona, runs from south of Phoenix to the borders of New Mexico and Utah, covering a significant portion of eastern and northern Arizona.
The current congressional boundaries, redrawn in 2021 during the decennial redistricting, have shifted political dynamics in favor of Republicans. The district now includes GOP-stronghold Yavapai County and offers the party a seven-point advantage over Democrats.
Congressional District 2 spans about 60% of Arizona, incorporating substantial tribal lands inhabited by 14 tribes. Tribal members comprise approximately 20% of the district’s total population, which influences local political agendas.
At 43 years old, Crane resides in Oro Valley, just outside the district. A former U.S. Navy SEAL, he ran a business named Bottle Breacher before selling it in 2022. His role in Congress includes membership on several influential committees, such as Homeland Security, Veteran Affairs, and Small Business.
During his initial term, Crane sponsored 15 bills predominantly addressing veterans’ issues, public lands, and immigration. While two of these bills passed the House, none were enacted into law.
Crane has notably made headlines for voting to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, showcasing his influence within the party. His legislative priorities include a strong opposition to reproductive rights, exemplified through his co-sponsorship of “The Life At Conception Act,” aiming to impose strict limitations on abortion, contraceptives, and IVF procedures.
