Diamondbacks bolster lineup by trading for All-Star Josh Naylor

PHOENIX — In a significant move over the weekend, the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor from the Cleveland Guardians. The trade involved right-hander Slade Cecconi heading to Cleveland, along with a 2025 competitive balance Round B draft pick.

The Guardians, having revamped their infield this offseason, wasted no time to address the vacancy left by Naylor. They have reportedly signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana to a one-year, $12 million contract, pending a physical examination.

Naylor, 27, is coming off a breakout season in which he hit a career-high 31 home runs and recorded 108 RBIs. His consistent performance over the past three years solidified his role as Cleveland’s primary first baseman. He is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.

This trade follows another major deal for the Guardians, who recently sent Gold Glove second baseman Andrés Giménez to Toronto as part of a three-team trade. Cleveland has also acquired right-hander Luis Ortiz from Pittsburgh, hinting at a busy offseason strategy.

For the Diamondbacks, acquiring Naylor fills a critical gap after Christian Walker’s departure to the Houston Astros. Arizona general manager Mike Hazen expressed confidence that Naylor will enhance the batting lineup alongside Eugenio Suarez, Ketel Marte, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Cecconi, 25, who posted a 2-7 record with a 6.66 ERA last season, adds pitching depth to Cleveland’s roster. He has experienced time in the majors over the last two years, indicating potential for growth.

Santana brings a wealth of experience to the Guardians, having previously spent a decade with the franchise. He was a fan favorite during his initial tenure and returned to the team in 2019 after stints with various clubs.

While Naylor has been a reliable offensive contributor, questions about his fielding ability linger. Cleveland appears ready to explore other options at first base, including Kyle Manzardo, as it seeks to optimize its lineup.

With Naylor’s trade, the Guardians will miss the dynamic between him and younger brother Bo Naylor, Cleveland’s primary catcher. This brotherly bond, which has played out on the field, adds a poignant note to this roster change.

Phoenix, already a hub for professional sports, continues to expand its landscape with the Diamondbacks, along with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, and WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, highlighting the vibrant sports culture in the region.
