Pima JTED showcases high school Career & Technical Ed courses this weekend

The Pima Joint Technical Education District (JTED) will host a program showcase on January 25, highlighting 32 Career & Technical Education offerings. Set to take place at the JTED@The Bridges campus, the event provides an opportunity for visitors to explore diverse fields such as nursing, pharmacology, aviation, robotics, manufacturing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, culinary arts, and game design.

Attendees will engage with instructors through live demonstrations and hands-on activities, showcasing the practical skills students can acquire. Each year, nearly 3,000 students enroll in JTED programs, earning valuable certificates that facilitate immediate employment post-graduation or pave the way for further education at Pima Community College or other institutions.

The Bridges campus, established in fall 2020, features advanced classrooms and laboratories equipped with welding bays, plasma cutters, and even a mini-wind tunnel. Other facilities include a healthcare clinic and commercial kitchen, where students gain real-world experience in catering.

Greg D’Anna, a spokesman for JTED, emphasized the evolution of vocational training. “We no longer have home ec and shop,” he stated, noting the replacement with modern programs like construction technologies and culinary arts. The JTED model enables local districts to develop central facilities for specialized training that can be accessed by students throughout the region.

While program duration varies, students typically attend classes several hours a week either at the Bridges campus or satellite locations. The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) operates Innovation Tech High School on the campus, allowing students to complete essential coursework alongside their JTED electives.

JTED services are available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors across Pima County, as well as certain areas in Santa Cruz and Pinal counties. Enrollment is open to students from public, charter, and private schools, including homeschooled individuals, although some may incur tuition fees based on scholarship programs.

The program showcase will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and enrollment kicks off on January 27. For more information, visit the JTED enrollment site.
