Arizona’s Primary Election This Tuesday: Essential Guide on When, Where, and How to Vote

The 2024 election season is in full swing across the United States. Here's when Arizonans can cast their votes in the Primary Election.

PHOENIX — Arizona is set to play a critical role in the White House race as it did in 2020. Tuesday’s state primaries will establish ground for competitive contests that might determine control of the closely divided U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and both chambers of the state legislature.

Here is everything you need to know before Arizona's primary.

When is the Arizona Primary Election?

Arizona's primary election will occur on Tuesday, July 30. Voting starts at 6 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. However, the Navajo Nation observes daylight saving time, so polls there close at 6 p.m. Arizona time, affecting parts of three counties in the 2nd Congressional District.

Where can I go to vote?

A complete list of polling places in Maricopa County can be found here.

The Arizona Secretary of State website provides contact information for all local election officials if you have questions about where to vote, voting procedures, or polling hours.

Who is on the ballot for the Primary Election?

The Republican primary features ex-2022 gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake, Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, and neuroscientist Elizabeth Reye, competing to replace U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. Lake has focused her campaign on Rep. Ruben Gallego and President Joe Biden, bypassing a primary debate.

In the U.S. House, Democrats aim to unseat two vulnerable Arizona Republican incumbents in districts narrowly won by Biden in 2020, including seven-term Rep. David Schweikert and Rep. Juan Ciscomani.

In the 1st Congressional District, Schweikert is the Republican front-runner against businessman Robert Backie and ex-FBI agent Kim George. Democrats competing include Andrei Cherny, Marlene Galán-Woods, Andrew Horne, Kurt Kroemer, Conor O’Callaghan, and Amish Shah.

In the 6th Congressional District, Rep. Juan Ciscomani faces a primary challenge from Kathleen Winn. If victorious, he'll face Democrat Kirsten Engel, whom he narrowly defeated in 2022.

The 2nd Congressional District sees first-term Republican Rep. Eli Crane up against Jack Smith in the primary. Other congressional districts are generally less competitive but feature notable matchups.

In the state legislature, Republicans hold slim majorities in both chambers. Democrats aim to control the state Senate for the first time since 1992 and the state House since 1966.

The primary was initially scheduled for Aug. 6, but the date was changed to give counties more time to tally votes in case of an automatic recount.

A comprehensive list of candidates on the ballot can be found here.

Who can vote in the Primary Election?

Registered party members vote in their party’s primary. Independent or unaffiliated voters can opt to participate in either primary.

In the midterm primaries, Republicans turned out nearly 18%, while Democrats saw about 13% voter participation. Persons on the Active Early Voting List are automatically sent mail ballots, with the majority voting early.

How long does vote-counting usually take?

In the 2022 midterm primaries, initial results were reported within minutes after the polls closed. The final tally took until early the following morning to complete.

Are we there yet?

There are 98 days until the November general election as of Tuesday.
