Police Rush to Elementary School After Gun Discovered with Student
The Lake Havasu City Police Department responded to a call from Smoketree Elementary School this week after a student was found with a firearm.
Police reported the weapon was unloaded, and no live ammunition was in the student’s possession when teachers discovered the firearm on Tuesday afternoon.
Investigations revealed the student found the gun while helping family members clean out a storage unit. The child intended to show the weapon to friends and did not make any threats.
Authorities confirmed there is no risk to students or the community as a result of the incident.
Given the student’s age, law enforcement will review the case with the Mohave County Juvenile Probation Department for potential charges. The school will also enforce its own disciplinary measures.
Attempts to reach Lake Havasu Unified School District Superintendent Rebecca Stone and Smoketree Elementary Principal Nina Mersing by phone were unsuccessful as of Wednesday afternoon.
