‘Love Letters’ Takes Center Stage: An Emotional Journey Unfolds
The Sedona International Film Festival is set to stage A.R. Gurney’s acclaimed two-person play, “Love Letters,” at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Performances are scheduled for 4 p.m. on February 8, 7 p.m. on February 14, and 2 p.m. on February 15.
Leslie Brott and Chris Mixon will portray the central characters, Melissa and Andrew, under the direction of Richie Call. This production marks the inaugural effort of SIFF’s new Sedona Professional Theatre Company, which aims to collaborate with the Utah Shakespeare Festival in bringing seasoned Actors’ Equity Association performers to the area.
According to a recent press release, the narrative centers on the lifelong friendship of Melissa and Andrew, who exchange letters from childhood through their adult lives, encountering various life changes along the way. While Andrew serves in the military, Melissa marries. Yet, their bond persists through letters that chronicle their personal journeys, including Andrew’s rise to the U.S. Senate.
“Love Letters” has become a cherished choice for prominent actors since its debut in 1988, allowing performers to engage deeply without extensive memorization. Notable past actors include Mia Farrow and Christopher Reeve. It was adapted into a television film in 1999, starring Steven Weber and Laura Linney.
Brott highlighted the importance of presenting relatable experiences, particularly for those over 50. “I want people to recognize that relationships require work, forgiveness, and compassion,” she explained. Her character is portrayed as rebellious, while Mixon’s character embodies structure.
Reflecting on the themes of the play, Mixon remarked, “Love isn’t just an emotion; it’s a choice.” He connected the story to his upbringing, noting how Andrew’s values resonate with his own experiences of loyalty, patriotism, and hope for change in society.
Brott added, “Theatre allows us to explore deep emotions in a safe way.” She emphasized the joy of experiencing human connections through the performance.
Tickets for “Love Letters” are priced at $30 in advance and $35 at the door. For additional information or to purchase tickets, visit www.SedonaFilmFestival.org or call (928) 282-1177.
