Volunteer brings major enhancements to Cave Creek Museum, Arizona gold mining experience

The Cave Creek Museum is set to unveil its interactive Arizona Gold Mining Experience on Saturday, December 28. This engaging exhibit highlights the historical significance of gold mining in the region and features a variety of exhibits, including a mine shaft that simulates an explosion of sights and sounds, a tramway for transporting ore, and the historic 10-stamp mill, alongside gold panning activities.

This initiative owes much of its success to dedicated volunteers, particularly Paul Diefenderfer. Diefenderfer has been a loyal volunteer for over 16 years and plays a significant role in bringing the mining experience to life.

His commitment to the museum was sparked by witnessing an APS truck transporting 1800s mining equipment from the Golden Reef Mine. Curious about the process, he reached out to the museum’s executive director and quickly became involved with the Dream Team, a group dedicated to restoring the stamp mill.

The restoration project took five years, during which Diefenderfer leveraged his skills in ironwork, concrete, and electrical systems. He was instrumental in establishing the mill’s foundation, pouring 15 yards of concrete to support it, and constructing vital components necessary for the mill’s operation, effectively reviving a piece of history.

Diefenderfer reflected on his contributions, stating, “Once the stamp mill was operational, I helped build a fence around it and assisted in constructing the tramway. I forged many missing pieces for the ore-carrying system.” His craftsmanship is evident throughout the exhibit, including a functioning blacksmith shop where he demonstrates traditional techniques.

When asked why he continues to volunteer, Diefenderfer emphasized his passion for tackling complex challenges alongside fellow volunteers. “I volunteer because I love the challenges museum work offers,” he explained. “It’s rewarding to collaborate with others to resolve issues.”

His involvement extends beyond the gold mining exhibit; he has contributed to various projects within the museum, from installing a rug loom to repairing historic artifacts. Diefenderfer’s commitment not only enriches the museum experience for visitors but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among the volunteer community.

Individuals interested in the Arizona Gold Mining Experience can make reservations by visiting cavecreekmuseum.org or calling 480.488.2764 to witness the hard work of the dedicated volunteers firsthand.

Paul Diefenderfer is showcased at the museum, where he expertly holds stabilizing bars on the Golden Reef Stamp Mill tramway. These bars are crucial for maintaining structural integrity under the weight of ore, demonstrating his invaluable contribution to preserving regional mining history.
