Vatican Reports Pope Francis’s Health Takes a Critical Turn

ROME, Italy — Pope Francis found himself in critical condition Saturday following a severe respiratory crisis. The 88-year-old pontiff, currently hospitalized for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, necessitated high flows of oxygen, according to the Vatican’s latest medical update.
His hospitalization at Gemelli Hospital began on February 14, after a bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors initially diagnosed a multifaceted viral, bacterial, and fungal infection in his respiratory system, later confirming pneumonia affecting both lungs. The pope has been receiving extensive treatment, including blood transfusions due to low platelet counts linked to anemia.
Despite these challenges, the Vatican reported that Francis remains alert, spending his days in an armchair, though he experiences increased pain compared to the previous day. Doctors assert that his prognosis remains precarious, with the main concern being the potential onset of sepsis, a life-threatening complication from pneumonia.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, leading the medical team at Gemelli, emphasized the risks involved. He explained that there is a possibility for harmful bacteria from the respiratory system to enter the bloodstream, leading to serious complications. “Sepsis, with his respiratory problems and age, would be really difficult to overcome,” he noted at a press briefing.
While the pope’s health remains a priority, speculation about his potential resignation has surfaced. The Vatican has actively pushed back against rumors regarding this issue. Cardinal Pietro Parolin addressed these concerns in a recent interview, underscoring the importance of focusing on Francis’s well-being rather than unsubstantiated claims.
As the Vatican engages in its Holy Year celebrations, with deacons gathered for a special weekend, the pope’s absence is notable. Despite his physical unavailability, there remains a strong sentiment among attendees that Francis is spiritually present. Luis Arnaldo López Quirindongo, a deacon from Puerto Rico, expressed this sentiment during the Jubilee celebrations.
The Vatican continues its efforts to provide clear communication regarding Francis’s health while emphasizing his ongoing consciousness and engagement in church matters. For now, the focus remains on prayer and support for his recovery.
