Valley animal rescue helps bring attention to Gilbert teen’s murder case

As her family waits for a break in her case, their mission of doing what made Rachel happy continues.

GILBERT, Ariz. — There is a $7,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Rachel Hansen’s killer. It’s been over two years since the 19-year-old was shot while sleeping in her Gilbert apartment.

Her passion for saving animals lives on as her family hopes it will help someone bring a break in her case.

“Tragically, Rachel was shot and killed in her apartment two years ago, on June 4, 2022,” shared Kim Hansen, Rachel’s mom. “We’re hopeful we can ultimately bring justice for Rachel.”

Rachel had just moved into a new apartment in Gilbert off South Coronado Road by Santan Village Parkway. She dreamed of merging her love of horses with a business to help people find horse properties.

“That’s why she moved into the apartment, to be close to home yet independent,” shared Kim. “She was reducing her horse world clients and wanted to start working in real estate.”

Rachel’s aspirations were cut short by tragedy. She was shot while sleeping in her own bed and managed to call 911 herself.

“That’s my Rachel,” said Kim. “She was always the first to jump in and solve problems. She did the same for herself.”

Now her family is seeking public help. Silent Witness offers a $7,000 reward for information that leads to her killer’s arrest and conviction.

“We believe someone out there knows something,” said Kim.

In the interim, their mission to continue Rachel’s passion for saving animals persists.

“I realized I needed to honor her memory in a way that would make her happy. She always wanted to start a rescue,” shared Kim.

Thus, Rachel’s Rescue was founded. The organization takes in animals, cares for them, and finds them forever homes—all in Rachel’s name.

“She had such a beautiful, giving heart, always helping others,” said Kim.

Rachel continues to make a difference through Rachel’s Rescue. Her family hopes that by keeping her name and case in the public eye, they can achieve justice for her.

Gilbert Police emphasized, “This case remains a priority. We understand how tough lengthy investigations can be on families and friends, as well as our community…”
