Crosswalk, road improvements on deck for London Bridge

Lake Havasu City has officially expanded the scope of its City Core Paving Project to include essential repairs on the London Bridge deck. The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to authorize an additional $254,299.50 to Pioneer Earthmovers Inc., raising the project’s total cost to $4,994,921.50. Council Member Nancy Campbell abstained from the vote.

City engineer Shawn Clarke outlined the planned upgrades, which will involve milling and replacing the asphalt on the London Bridge deck. Additionally, drainage systems will be improved, new curbs and gutters constructed, ADA ramps replaced, and crosswalks restriped. Funding for these initiatives will be sourced from the Highway User Revenue Fund.

The necessity for these repairs emerged from a recent bi-annual inspection by the Arizona Department of Transportation, which identified the need for rehabilitation due to wear on the bridge deck. Mayor Cal Sheehy highlighted that merging the deck repairs with the ongoing paving project is designed to optimize efficiency and reduce costs.

“The company’s already on site, working on the core pavement project, so addressing these repairs now saves time and money,” Council Member David Lane added.

Originally scheduled to conclude in October, project completion has now been pushed to mid-November, according to Clarke. The City Core Paving Project encompasses additional work, including pavement and water main replacements along critical roads such as McCulloch Boulevard, Swanson Avenue, Smoketree Avenue, and Riviera Drive.

The project is primarily funded through Highway User Revenue Funds (HURF) for street work, alongside water funds allocated for water main replacement. As construction progresses, temporary road closures will be implemented to facilitate the work.

City officials announced that Mesquite Boulevard and Riviera Drive will close on September 17 at 7 p.m., reopening the following morning around 3 a.m. The closures will affect through traffic on Mesquite Boulevard from Civic Center Lane to Moyo Drive, and on Riviera Drive from McCulloch Boulevard to Injo Drive.
