Your Brain on Caffeine

Don Senneville and Jim White

In an exciting venture for 2025, local coffee aficionados Ron and Nicollette, known as the Koffee King and Kueen of Karefree, are sharing their insights on coffee’s impact on health and creativity. This couple has long educated enthusiasts about the neuroscience of caffeine, intertwining their knowledge with artistic expression. Nicollette’s artistic background enriches their discourse, while Ron, a distinguished neuroscientist and musician, uses coffee as inspiration for his intricate latte art. Their work can be seen on Instagram under the handle @neurocyants.

Reflecting on their journey, they recount a pivotal moment marked by a motorcycle accident and subsequent neurologist advice. “Coffee will help your brain,” he said. That advice marked the beginning of their coffee exploration in their 60s. They emphasize coffee’s health benefits, such as its antioxidants, support for heart health, and ability to stimulate clear thinking. This revelation spurred their travels, discovering coffee culture globally, from the coffee houses of Europe to those in the Middle East. “Wherever we go, coffee is a unifying theme,” they stated, underscoring its global significance.

They also share an interesting tidbit about the origins of coffee. It all began with goats—their energetic response to eating coffee cherries caught a farmer’s eye. The first coffee houses emerged in the 15th century within the Muslim world, propelling coffee into European society in the 17th century, where they became known as “penny universities.” For just a penny, patrons could engage in enlightening discussions. Notably, these venues played key roles in historical events, such as the planning of the Boston Tea Party, which actually revolved around coffee shop conversations rather than tea.

For coffee enthusiasts, Nicollette offers a tip: Jamaican coffee, hailed for its sweetness, is a must-try. She also recommends a local gem in Phoenix, XOLO, where they can savor an innovative pistachio coffee that uniquely combines nut paste with the brew. “It’s worth the drive,” she insists, hoping readers also have their favorite morning beverage that kickstarts their brains.

As 2025 unfolds, the CUP enters its third year of publication. Don is currently in Tulum, while Jim is recovering from walking pneumonia. Both express gratitude for the continued support from their readers and the Sonoran News. They also humorously note their curiosity about the coffee preferences of fellow contributors, Tom and Melissa, and invite readers to share their own quirky coffee tips via email.
