Tuzigoot Celebrates Heritage Month with Exciting Events

Native American Heritage Month kicks off on Friday, Nov. 1, inviting the nation to honor American Indian peoples. This month serves as a tribute to the rich cultures, sacrifices, and contributions of Indigenous communities throughout history.

Celebrations will occur at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot national monuments, featuring weekly cultural demonstrations and presentations throughout November. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with various artistic and cultural expressions in the national parks.

Notable events include a presentation on Zuni fetishes and jewelry by Jimmy Yawakia at Montezuma Castle on Saturday, Nov. 9, followed by the same presentation at Tuzigoot on Sunday, Nov. 10. All events are free with paid admission, running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Montezuma Castle National Monument

  • Nov. 2-3: Yavapai Apache Nation Celebration featuring artists, singers, and dancers.
  • Nov. 9: Zuni Fetishes and Jewelry with Jimmy Yawakia and Duran Gasper.
  • Nov. 10: Hopi Basket Weaving, Wood Carving, and Art with Marvene and Nuvadi Dawahoya.
  • Nov. 16: Hopi Textiles with Davis Maho.
  • Nov. 17: Dine and Yavapai Apache Silversmithing with Dee Jackson.
  • Nov. 23: Hopi Katsinas with Ryon Polequaptewa, including a live concert at 2 p.m.
  • Nov. 24: Hopi Art with Filmer Kewanyama.
  • Nov. 30: Tohono O’odham Pottery with Kathleen Vance.

Tuzigoot National Monument

  • Nov. 2-3: Hopi Celebration with Pottery Demonstration led by Renee Archambeau.
  • Nov. 9: Hopi Basket Weaving, Wood Carving, and Art with Marvene and Nuvadi Dawahoya.
  • Nov. 10: Zuni Fetishes and Jewelry with Jimmy Yawakia and Duran Gasper.
  • Nov. 16: Dine and Yavapai Apache Silversmithing with Dee Jackson.
