Tucson's Loft Cinema Unveils Exciting New Screens

New screens coming soon to Tucson's Loft Cinema

The Loft Cinema is set for major renovations, which include new screens, a second floor, and more modern features to enhance the movie-going experience.

Last week, cinephiles and staff gathered at the East Speedway movie house to hear about the ambitious plans.

Two new DCP screens, a permanent open-air theater, and a rooftop bar are expected to be completed by February 2025.

Barker Contracting and Vint & Associates Architects are leading the effort to bring these plans, long in the making, to life.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Peggy Johnson, executive director of the nonprofit cinema, spoke about the anticipated transformations.

“This is going to put Tucson on the map in a whole new way,” said Johnson, highlighting the theater’s 52-year legacy in the community.

Johnson emphasized the uniqueness of the independent, stand-alone arthouse that offers specialized programming.

Program director Jeff Yanc added, “It’s really going to elevate us to a national level, making us a model for what art houses can be.”

Yanc recounted how the theater’s reputation drew a couple from Michigan who rented a local B&B just to visit The Loft.

Architect Bob Vint showcased the final design plans, promising improved facilities including an elevator, enhanced wheelchair accessibility, upgraded restrooms, a revamped lobby, and larger concession stands.

Victor Bostick, The Loft’s purchasing specialist, discussed the expansion’s significance.

“Having more space will allow us to welcome a broader segment of the public,” said Bostick, who is also involved with the Indigenous Film Committee.

Bostick highlighted how the renovations align with The Loft’s mission to raise awareness of indigenous and underrepresented communities through film.

Despite ongoing construction, The Loft will remain open, albeit at reduced capacity, to continue hosting festivals and special events.

“Staying open during construction will be challenging,” noted Yanc, “but challenges bring excitement.”

The Loft is currently seeking donations to support the $4.2 million project.

“I think the community recognizes what an asset The Loft is,” Johnson said confidently.

Donations can be made on the Support The Loft Campaign page, with perks such as dedications on plaques, stars, posters, and murals within the theater.

Renovations are expected to conclude by February or March 2025, with the outdoor area slated for completion next summer. Further details are available on The Loft Cinema’s website.
