Tucson Hosts Saturday Collection Event for Household Hazardous Waste Disposal
Tucson residents are invited to participate in a household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, November 9. This monthly initiative by the city’s Environmental and General Services Department will take place at Pima College East, located at 8181 E. Irvington Rd., from 8 a.m. to noon.
Residents can safely dispose of a variety of hazardous items, including old cleaning products, batteries, paint, propane cylinders, pool chemicals, printer cartridges, auto batteries, and oil filters. Additionally, citizens may bring up to three boxes of documents for shredding, ensuring that sensitive information is securely destroyed.
City officials are urging the community to dispose of batteries during this event to safeguard trash workers and landfill operators from potential hazards. However, the city will not accept unknown chemicals, medical waste (including sharps and medications), business waste, or hazardous items such as explosives, ammunition, and radioactive materials. A comprehensive list of acceptable items is available on the city’s website.
For those unable to attend the Saturday event, hazardous household waste can be dropped off at the Los Reales Landfill, situated at 5300 E. Los Reales Rd. This drop-off service is available on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., except during the monthly collection events.
The program is complimentary for Tucson residents; however, individuals from nearby suburbs or unincorporated Pima County are required to pay a $10 fee for disposal. Proof of residency must be provided through a driver’s license or current utility bill.
Looking ahead, the next collection event is scheduled for December 14 at Jacobs Park, located at 3300 N. Fairview Ave. Residents can find a full list of collection dates and further information online.
