Trump and Harris to meet in long-anticipated debate Tuesday night in Philadelphia

WASHINGTON — A pivotal debate is set for Tuesday night in Philadelphia, featuring former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. This event follows President Joe Biden’s significant debate missteps that led to his withdrawal from the race just over two months ago.

This debate, hosted by ABC News at 9 p.m. Eastern, marks the first face-to-face meeting between the two candidates, according to Harris. It will be available for livestream on ABC.com, as well as on ABC News Live, Disney+, and Hulu, and will also air on C-SPAN.

As the only planned televised encounter prior to Election Day in November, this debate takes place shortly before early voting begins in Pennsylvania on September 16.

Trump’s campaign is preparing to confront Harris regarding her evolving positions on topics such as fracking and immigration. “We’ll be ready tomorrow, President Trump will be ready,” stated Jason Miller, a senior adviser in Trump’s camp. He expressed confidence in Trump’s preparation while questioning whether Harris would be equally ready to defend her positions.

In addition, Trump intends to associate Harris with decisions made during the Biden administration, a narrative bolstered by House Republicans who recently released a report attributing blame for the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal to the Biden-Harris administration.

GOP remarks included labeling Harris as “co-president,” suggesting she shares responsibility for the administration’s actions. The report from the GOP-led House Foreign Affairs Committee mentions Harris’ name 285 times, reinforcing their narrative against her.

Contradicting the Republican claims, retired U.S. military leaders defended Harris, emphasizing Trump’s lack of accountability for his negotiating strategies with the Taliban that preceded his exit from office.

While Trump faced scrutiny regarding his handling of the Afghanistan situation, he also dealt with ongoing legal challenges. After being convicted in New York for falsifying business records, a judge recently postponed his sentencing until after the November elections.

Meanwhile, Harris used the time leading up to the debate to strengthen her campaign. She traveled across Pennsylvania after preparing for the debate in Pittsburgh. Her campaign released an advertisement featuring former Trump officials who oppose his return to the presidency.

In conjunction with her campaign efforts, Harris unveiled her policy platform one day prior to the debate. The comprehensive plan focuses on several key areas, including tax reductions for the middle class, affordable housing initiatives, reproductive rights, and veteran support.

Harris expressed her commitment to fostering unity in the nation. When asked if she was prepared for the debate, she responded affirmatively and underscored the importance of overcoming divisiveness.

As the debate approaches, with the potential to influence voter sentiment significantly, both candidates brace for a crucial exchange on the national stage. The outcome could serve as a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the November elections.
