Samoa boxing coach dies at Paris Olympic village

Officials reported the death of the Samoa national boxing coach mere hours before the commencement of the Summer Games.

WASHINGTON — Lionel Elika Fatupaito, the national boxing coach for Samoa, passed away at the Paris Olympics village following a cardiac arrest, according to French media on Saturday.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) released a statement expressing “heartfelt condolences” to Fatupaito’s family, friends, and colleagues.

“Lionel’s dedication and passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with Team Samoa and all those affected by this profound loss,” the IBA stated.

The Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee confirmed that he died on Friday morning, just ahead of the Opening Ceremony.

“Lionel was one of Samoa’s top boxing coaches and a great believer in the Olympic ideal,” stated Samoa NOC President Pauga Talalelei Pauga.

Agence France Presse reported that while emergency responders treated Fatupaito, resuscitation efforts failed. The local prosecutor’s office indicated that he passed away from “natural causes.”
