Tortosa Teen Charged in Disturbing Riot Incident
Dwayne Ellis Jr., a 19-year-old from Tortosa, was arrested on August 27, 2024, following a riot that involved disorderly conduct with a weapon, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
Maricopa police issued felony charges against Ellis after responding to reports of a significant street fight near Padilla Street and Toledo Avenue. The altercation, which erupted around 5:30 p.m., involved approximately 30 individuals and was traced back to a dispute between two families regarding a woman.
Video footage captured the two families exchanging threats from a distance of 20 to 30 feet. Tensions escalated when Ellis charged towards the opposing side wielding a machete, seeking to defend his brother due to fears of an armed confrontation. Fortunately, a family member intervened, disarming Ellis before any harm could occur, which led to a larger riot.
Investigations revealed no firearm was present, as police examined video evidence and spoke with witnesses. Ellis faces charges of riot and disorderly conduct with a weapon, both classified as felonies. Additionally, three minors involved were detained, although details of their charges have not been disclosed.
Maricopa Police Department spokesperson Monica Williams noted the fortunate absence of serious injuries resulting from the incident. She urged community members to resolve disputes peacefully and seek police assistance to avoid situations that could escalate dangerously.
“It is essential to address conflicts before they turn into serious confrontations,” Williams emphasized. “We encourage everyone to remain calm and utilize available resources.”
