The American Dream: A Worthy Pursuit Beyond a Catchy Slogan

Vice President Kamala Harris is positioning herself as the first woman, first Black woman, and first woman of Asian descent to be elected president of the United States. Her primary message on the campaign trail revolves around fulfilling “the promise of America.”
This slogan signifies more than just a catchy phrase; it embodies the ongoing journey to realize the democratic ideals set forth by the nation’s founders, a majority of whom were slaveholders. The sentiment echoes President Barack Obama’s call for the “pursuit of a more perfect union.”
Although achieving perfection in democracy remains an elusive goal, the significance lies in the journey itself—a journey that reflects a multicultural and representative democracy aiming for visionary expectations.
What looms large over this presidential election and the future is whether the nation will build upon its progress or regress from its achievements. History shows that empires, no matter how great, eventually fade. The trajectory of the United States, despite its strengths, could follow a similar path if vigilance wanes.
Nonetheless, there are countless citizens, including immigrants eager to join the fold, who wish to see America thrive. The U.S. may be deeply flawed, but it represents an exceptional experiment in governance, striving daily to approach its highest ideals.
Labeling this aspiration as merely the “American Dream” oversimplifies its essence. Too often, the term is associated with material success rather than the fundamental democratic aspirations and human compassion it should invoke.
Nevertheless, the achievements of the United States over nearly 250 years are remarkable. It stands as a powerful and wealthy nation, with a democratic election system that remains the envy of many. America indeed has greatness, though perfection is far from reality.
The pressing question is whether the nation can continue to maintain and enhance its accomplishments. I believe it can—with the support of those who still find value in pursuing “the Promise of America.”
