Former Arizona State Senator Steve Kaiser has made a significant transition since resigning from the Legislature in 2023. Citing a desire to spend more time with family and concerns about the influence of politics on his character, Kaiser, a Republican, has established his own lobbying firm. In a recent interview with the Arizona Capitol Times, he expressed his hopes of making a positive impact on state policy from this new vantage point.

Kaiser reflected on his tenure in the Legislature, highlighting the exhilarating nature of committee debates. “I loved the thrill of the debate,” he remarked, recalling moments of victory when his bills passed after intense discussions. He acknowledged the unpredictable dynamics within committees, where a single word could sway the outcome.

Addressing the importance of bipartisanship, Kaiser stated, “Working across the aisle is crucial.” He emphasized that collaboration often results in superior legislation, as differing perspectives challenge lawmakers to refine their ideas.

The emotional weight of his resignation weighed heavily on Kaiser. He shared that he entered politics with an awareness of its potential to alter him, leading to a yearning for personal authenticity. To maintain humility, he created a reminder wall in his office featuring images that symbolized service, mentorship, and leadership. Although these reminders were intended to ground him, he found himself increasingly consumed by the responsibilities of office, often prioritizing work over family.

Since stepping down, Kaiser has reoriented his life. With the successful sale of his business in 2022, he founded the Arizona Prosperity Project and has been able to devote time to his family. “It’s been a great change,” he said, noting the revitalization of his priorities. He now balances work with family life and is committed to serving clients while contributing to Arizona’s progress.

Kaiser continues to engage in policy work, expressing enthusiasm for topics such as criminal justice and education reform. He noted that his current role allows for deeper exploration of issues, contrasting with the broad, shallow focus of his legislative responsibilities. “I’m doing more policy work now than I was, and I find that really interesting and rewarding,” he stated.

Regarding recent housing legislation, Kaiser confirmed his involvement in the legislative process, including two successful housing bills. He expressed disappointment over the failure of the Starter Home Act, advocating for its reconsideration in the future. “We desperately need better housing options,” he asserted, recognizing the challenges faced by young people in establishing equity.

Looking ahead, Kaiser is eager about the return of a home confinement bill he championed during his legislative tenure. This legislation aims to provide non-violent offenders nearing the end of their sentences with the opportunity for reintegration through home confinement. “I’m very excited that I’ll be working on that,” he concluded, signaling his ongoing commitment to impactful policy work in Arizona.
