Southbound lanes of State Route 87 reopen, northbound lanes still closed after garbage truck fire

The northbound lanes of the Beeline Highway remain closed at Gilbert Road due to a significant vehicle fire. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) reports that the southbound lanes have reopened, following the incident that occurred around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The highway closure was prompted by a garbage truck fire, which caused significant delays for motorists. While southbound traffic resumed at approximately 9:45 p.m., northbound lanes are still obstructed.

ADOT officials have not provided a timeline for when the northbound lanes will reopen. Motorists in the area should prepare for ongoing delays. ADOT encourages drivers to stay informed about real-time traffic conditions by visiting AZ511.gov or by calling 511.

Videos from the scene suggest that a garbage truck was the vehicle that caught fire. Fortunately, the Salt River Landfill’s proximity at Gilbert Road may have contributed to a quick response from emergency services.

This situation is continuing to develop, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

CLOSURE: SR 87 is currently closed in both directions at Gilbert Road due to a vehicle fire. Expect delays, with no estimated time for reopening.
