Starline student to be recognized at state capitol for winning essay contest

Carson Blair, a sixth-grade student at Starline Elementary, is set to be recognized at the Arizona state capitol this Tuesday, having emerged as one of the 20 winners of the AZ529 Essay Writing Contest.

The Arizona State Treasurer’s Office, along with the AZ529 Advisory Committee, hosted the contest, inviting students in grades five and six across the state to express their aspirations through a three-paragraph essay. Students were asked to articulate their dream jobs and the methods they envisioned to achieve them. From a competitive field of hundreds, only 20 students were chosen as winners.

Blair, who penned an essay about his ambition to become an Olympic swimmer, will proudly represent Mohave County among the selected winners. The recognition event will feature Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee, who will announce the winners and present each with a special AZ529 account valued at $529.

The AZ529 Education Savings Plan enables families to save for various educational pathways, including college, community college, vocational training, and trade schools, providing a tax-free way to prepare for future academic endeavors. Earnings accumulated in these accounts remain tax-free when utilized for qualifying educational expenses.

In addition to the state-level recognition, Lake Havasu Unified School District Superintendent Rebecca Stone confirmed that Blair will be celebrated at an upcoming school board meeting.
