Sedona Winds renovates its ‘memory care’ assisted living area

Sedona Winds Assisted Living in the Village of Oak Creek has officially unveiled its new “memory support” area, named “Elements,” following extensive renovations costing $200,000. The launch, celebrated on February 12, features a designed space for 20 residents, each in their own apartment.

“Elements is a unique approach developed specifically for SLS Communities, featuring insights from experts with over 50 years of experience in dementia care,” stated Teri Cohen, spokesperson for Sedona Winds. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for residents through engagement, empowerment, and reliable support.

Joseph Hayes, digital marketer for SLS, noted that Sedona Winds has a history of providing memory care, previously termed memory support, and has undergone extensive renovations throughout their properties. “This was one of the larger renovations, completely overhauling the community,” he said.

Before admission to Elements, potential residents undergo an assessment to tailor a care plan featuring up to four levels of assistance, addressing the unique challenges of early-stage memory loss. The program encourages interaction with nature and gardening, enhancing residents’ well-being through outdoor activities.

A green color scheme in the new rooms fosters a connection to nature, according to Hayes. “We incorporate elements such as water and sound to enrich the environment,” he added. The Elements program is also set to include an aromatherapy system, enhancing the sensory experience during meals.

Meals at Elements are designed to stimulate appetites, featuring warm towels with lavender or eucalyptus presented before dining. Jenelle Johnson, regional director of assisted living, explained that this practice is intended to heighten sensory engagement for residents who may struggle with a reduced sense of taste or hunger.

All staff members at Elements will receive certification from the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners to ensure quality care. The facility offers a wide range of activities, including arts and crafts, mobility exercises, and sensory-focused interactions, managed by certified enrichment coordinator Nicole White.

For residents, the monthly fee for Elements is set at $5,900, which encompasses housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and various social activities. There are additional costs for advanced care, although it is anticipated that most residents will not incur extra fees initially.
