Sedona Serves Up Excitement: Pickleball Tournament Takes Center Stage

City of Sedona hosts pickleball tourney

The city of Sedona is set to host its inaugural Red Rock Rally Pickleball Tournament from April 24 to April 27. This event, organized in collaboration with the pickleball management company Pickleball Is Great, will take place at the Posse Grounds Park pickleball courts.

Featuring a round robin format for doubles, the tournament will include events across various age groups in men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles categories. Medals will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each category.

“We have a very active pickleball playing community here,” said Sedona Parks and Recreation Manager Josh Frewin. The idea of holding a tournament has long been discussed, but a lack of adequate facilities made it challenging until recently.

Last October, the city transformed one of the Posse Grounds Park’s softball fields into eight dedicated pickleball courts, investing $1.6 million in the project. “People are excited about it and to be getting on the new courts,” Frewin noted. With registration still open, he anticipates reaching close to full capacity, although a smaller turnout would streamline the event.

As of March 24, Frewin reported that about 50% of the anticipated player slots had already been filled. Additionally, the Sedona Posse Grounds Hub has been designated as a rentable venue, providing parking for attendees.

Volunteers are not currently needed, as Frewin plans to have referees for all matches, though lower-ranked games may require self-scoring. The tournament will be free for spectators, with bleachers set up for viewing. Vendors will offer pickleball gear, and food trucks are expected to participate.

With excitement building in the community, Frewin mentioned that the Sedona Pickleball Club boasts a list of 48 active participants, indicating a strong interest in formal competition.

Registration fees are set at $60 through March, increasing to $70 after April 1, with a final deadline of April 15. A $15 cancellation fee applies, and after April 1, no refunds will be issued, although up to a 50% refund may be available for weather-related cancellations.

Tournament T-shirts can be purchased for $17 upon registration or $25 on-site during the event. Frewin encourages both players and spectators to join in the fun. “Come on out and have some fun,” he said. “If you don’t want to compete, just come and watch some experienced players.”
