Experts recommend involving your children in the budgeting process while back-to-school shopping.

MESA, Ariz. — As Valley families hunt for back-to-school bargains, retailers are intensifying their discounts. Target has rolled out new deals this year for students.

The retailer’s “20 for $20” list is making headlines. For the first time, Target has compiled 20 essential school supplies costing less than $20 in total. Items include colored pencils, glue, and notebooks, with a backpack priced at just five dollars, the lowest in a decade.

Target’s Circle app offers additional savings. Teachers benefit from a special offer: an annual Target Circle 360 subscription featuring discounted same-day delivery, according to store director, Berto Gonzalez.

“We have up to 20 items adding up to $20,” Gonzalez stated. “From paper to folders priced at 15 cents, we’ve got a range of supplies for all grades, from pre-kinder to college.”

The Cook family expressed gratitude for this year’s competitive prices. “We should’ve set up a budget,” Cook admitted. “But it’s nice to find some good deals here.”

Target is also reintroducing its 20% off for teachers until August alongside a one-time 20% discount for college students.

The National Retail Federation estimates that families with school-aged children will spend around $875 on clothing, shoes, and supplies this year, slightly less than last year’s $890.

Experts like Michael Klinkner, a licensed clinical social worker, advise involving kids in the budgeting process. This imparts decision-making power and prioritizes spending. He suggests inventorying existing supplies and making a list of needs.

Klinkner encourages turning budgeting into a game. “If there’s money left over, the child can spend it on something special,” he said. “It’s a fun way to teach budgeting and financial planning skills they’ll use for life.”

Early budgeting habits can establish lifelong financial skills for children, experts noted.
