Revolutionizing Health Care: A Collaborative Blueprint for Workforce Development

The health care sector faces a significant challenge as demand for workers escalates. Industry leaders must develop innovative strategies to ensure a sustainable workforce pipeline capable of meeting burgeoning needs. Collaboration is essential for overcoming these obstacles.
In Arizona, the health care industry has expanded by an average of 2.9% annually over the past decade, well above the national average of 1.7%. Despite this growth, a critical workforce shortage persists. The Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation’s 2023 Healthcare Workforce Report indicates Arizona will require 132,800 new health care workers in the next decade but will only graduate 56,800, resulting in a daunting deficit of 76,000 workers.
To combat this issue, HonorHealth, with the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation, has introduced initiatives such as Connect to Work AZ. This program aims to connect underemployed and unemployed individuals with promising health care career opportunities, enhancing economic mobility. So far, the initiative has successfully placed over 100 job seekers in health care roles, with 40 of these placements within HonorHealth itself. These efforts showcase the potential of tapping into overlooked talent pools.
Collaboration extends beyond recruitment. The health care workforce collaborative, comprising major hospital systems in the region, is a testament to what can be achieved through partnership. The group is actively working to address workforce gaps, having launched new nursing specialty programs to retain experienced nurses. HonorHealth’s involvement includes leading a Joint Marketing Campaign Subcommittee focused on attracting out-of-state health care talent to Arizona. These initiatives illustrate how collective action can effectively resolve industry-wide challenges.
Inspiring future talent is equally important. Programs like ElevateEdAZ by the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation aim to expose students to health care career opportunities and provide pathways to high-wage roles. Through job shadows, internships, and mock interviews, employers engage students, shaping a well-prepared workforce for the future of Arizona’s health care system.
HonorHealth’s long-standing partnerships with local organizations highlight the importance of collaborative efforts for community well-being. The priority is to predict and address workforce gaps to maintain high standards of care. HonorHealth’s commitment to workforce development encompasses everything from entry-level recruitment to mentorship programs that cultivate a skilled, diverse future workforce.
Attracting talent is only part of the equation. Fostering a supportive environment through thorough onboarding, promoting growth, and encouraging community engagement are vital for long-term success. HonorHealth’s internal initiatives demonstrate the effectiveness of such programs, having placed 40 individuals throughout the organization and emphasizing mentorship and professional development.
As Arizona aims to establish itself as a health care hub, a collaborative approach remains key to attracting and retaining a top-tier workforce. Both HonorHealth and the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation are committed to addressing the evolving needs of the community through initiatives like Connect to Work AZ and ElevateEdAZ.
Healthcare organizations are encouraged to join in this critical mission. By working together, we can ensure a sustainable health care workforce that will support Arizona’s growth and success for years to come.
