Republicans Poised to Hold Power in Arizona’s House and Senate

By Daniel Stefanski |
As Arizona continues to tally votes, Republicans are poised for a potential return to power in the state legislature. Following a tight grip on both the House and Senate over the past two years, Republicans may reclaim control to counteract Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs’ agenda.
Significant resources were invested by both parties into key districts ahead of the state elections to secure a majority for the upcoming legislative session. Current results show Republicans ahead in 16 of the 30 State Senate contests. Notably, Districts 2 (Shawnna Bolick) and 4 (Carine Werner) remain extremely competitive, with a margin of less than 2,000 votes.
Democrats are leading in 14 districts, with a similar tight competition in District 9 (Eva Burch), District 17 (John McLean), and District 23 (Brian Fernandez), all within 2,000 votes of their opponents. On the House side, Republicans lead in 32 of the 60 races, while Democrats hold an edge in the remaining districts, indicating a highly contentious race ahead.
The outcomes of these races are critical, particularly with the upcoming re-election bid for Governor Hobbs. Should Democrats secure a majority in both legislative chambers, they could push forward key policy initiatives, notably revisiting the controversial Empowerment Scholarship Accounts program expanded under former Governor Doug Ducey.
As the situation develops, all eyes are on the final results, with the new legislators set to be sworn in at the beginning of January, marking a significant shift in Arizona’s political landscape.
