Republican David Schweikert has secured his eighth term representing Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, successfully overcoming a bid from Democratic challenger Amish Shah, a former state lawmaker and emergency room doctor.

The district encompasses north Phoenix as well as Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and Paradise Valley. Despite a Republican registration advantage, voter patterns shifted toward the center since Donald Trump’s 2016 election, leading some lifelong Republicans to either vote Democratic or abstain.

Redistricting ahead of the 2022 midterm elections heightened expectations for a Democratic upset against Schweikert, who has focused his platform on issues like government spending. Chris Baker, Schweikert’s spokesman, stated, “Congressman Schweikert is pleased to have the support from the voters of Arizona’s 1st Congressional district,” highlighting the voters’ desire for a representative focused on economic stability and border security.

Shah’s campaign, however, did not respond to requests for comment following the election outcome. Schweikert has faced a number of challenging races; in 2022, he won reelection by a narrow margin of just 3,200 votes against an underfunded Democratic opponent.

His electoral success comes amid a backdrop of ethical controversies. In 2022, Schweikert was fined $125,000 by the Federal Election Commission for inappropriate use of campaign funds. Previously, he had settled with the U.S. House Committee on Ethics for campaign finance violations, incurring a $50,000 fine.

Amish Shah, who emerged as the Democratic candidate among six contenders, focused his campaign on initiatives to lower housing and healthcare costs. Other congressional races in Arizona unfolded concurrently, including Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton’s victory over Republican Kelly Cooper in the 4th District, which covers Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler.

In a tight contest, Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani fought against Democrat Kirsten Engel for control of the 6th Congressional District, while the closely watched U.S. Senate race between Republican Kari Lake and Democrat Ruben Gallego remains undecided.
