Progressive groups plead with Az congressional delegation for Supreme Court reforms

A coalition of progressive organizations in Arizona is urging Congress to implement significant reforms to the U.S. Supreme Court, which they label as “broken” and overly influenced by right-wing interests. This call to action is directed at Arizona’s congressional delegation, emphasizing the need for reform measures proposed by President Joe Biden earlier this year.

In a recent letter, the coalition of 15 groups supported Biden’s plan that includes introducing 18-year term limits for justices, allowing a new appointment from the president every two years. Additionally, the proposal advocates for establishing robust conduct and ethics rules, mandating the disclosure of gifts, prohibiting public political participation, and ensuring recusal in cases where justices or their spouses have financial or political conflicts.

This initiative emerges in response to declining public trust in the Supreme Court, exacerbated by recent ethical controversies and the contentious overturning of Roe v. Wade last year, a decision that contradicts prevalent public opinion on abortion. GOP leaders have dismissed Biden’s proposals, with House Speaker Mike Johnson branding them a “radical overhaul” aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the Court.

Johnson criticized the motives behind the suggested reforms, stating they reflect Democrats’ dissatisfaction with various Supreme Court rulings. The progressive coalition, however, points to the Court’s acceptance of a restrictive voter registration law in Arizona, arguing it contributes to voter suppression and widespread confusion ahead of elections.

They further contend that this situation results from a prolonged effort to fill the courts with partisan judges who prioritize political allegiance over legal interpretations. This argument is reinforced by a recent ruling granting extensive immunity to former President Donald Trump amidst ongoing legal challenges tied to the 2020 election and the events of January 6, 2021.

The coalition expressed concern that the Court has abandoned its alleged nonpartisanship, stating, “The U.S. Supreme Court has been captured by dangerous right-wing interests…to advance their agenda over the will of the people.” Stasha Rhodes, campaign director of United for Democracy, emphasized the necessity of protecting Arizonans’ rights and liberties from prevailing judicial overreach.

The signatories of the letter encompass various groups, including the Arizona NAACP State Conference, Civic Engagement Beyond Voting, and the National Council of Jewish Women Arizona, among others. Together, these organizations are advocating for a balanced and equitable judicial system that reflects the diverse interests of the public.
