Maricopa mayoral candidate Leon Potter conceded his election bid nine days after Arizona’s primary election. Potter, an underdog in the race, was officially defeated by incumbent Mayor Nancy Smith by 26 points, accounting for 2,311 votes, as per unofficial reports from Pinal County set to be ratified on Monday.

During his campaign, Potter attracted attention with his ambitious anti-growth platform. Despite his loss, he extended his congratulations to Mayor Smith, stating, “I want to congratulate Mayor Nancy Smith on winning the election to serve four more years as mayor of our fine City of Maricopa! I wish her the best.”

Reflecting on the election, Potter expressed gratitude towards his supporters. “We are blessed to live in a nation that allows us to select our government leaders in this way. I am honored voters had confidence to support me. I thank God for each one of them!”

Potter, who previously served on the Maricopa City Council before resigning in 2014, reiterated his ongoing commitment to public service. “While the 2024 mayoral election is behind us, I am not done,” he said. “I look forward to ways that I can continue to serve Maricopa, including serving in public office.”
