On Wednesday, the FBI’s Phoenix office commemorated the 64 officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2024. Under the direction of Kash Patel, the agency highlighted a new report focusing on these deaths and the alarming 85,000 assaults reported against law enforcement through the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

The report specifies that among the deceased, 64 officers were killed in felonious incidents, while an additional 43 lost their lives in accidents. Notably, 16 officers have already been feloniously killed in 2025, predominantly involving firearms in 75% of cases. The primary contexts for these fatalities included responses to unlawful activities (7 incidents), pursuits (3), and traffic stops (3).

Analysis indicates that April and August were particularly tragic months, with the Southern region noted for the highest fatalities while responding to suspicious activities.

During his address at the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) Conference, Patel emphasized the FBI’s dedication to honoring fallen officers and supporting their families and colleagues. “We are committed to relentlessly pursuing those who do them harm,” he stated.

In a heartfelt message for National Police Week, Patel addressed the nation, sharing his experience of notifying chiefs and sheriffs about line-of-duty deaths. “Every line of duty death is a tragedy not just for families and colleagues, but for entire communities,” he remarked.

Patel’s reflection on the risks faced by law enforcement underscores their unwavering commitment. “Officers go to work each day aware they may not return home, yet they choose to serve and protect,” he said. The sacrifices made are a reminder of the extraordinary dedication to public safety.

He concluded, “National Police Week allows us to express our gratitude for those who take an oath to protect our communities and pursue justice. The legacies of those who gave their lives deserve our honor and respect. The FBI stands united with all law enforcement partners in safeguarding our nation.”
