PACC to Enhance Pet Care Support for Spanish-Speaking Communities

Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) is set to extend its outreach campaign aimed at Spanish-speaking households into the new year. On Wednesday, the Pima County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a second $120,000 grant for Friends of PACC, the center’s nonprofit fundraising partner, to support its Spanish-language marketing initiatives.
José Merino, Deputy Director of Pima County Communications and project manager for the campaign, highlighted the importance of language in community engagement. “What we have found in the last year is that our Spanish-speaking community is incredibly grateful to receive resources in the language in which they are most comfortable,” he stated.
The upcoming phase of the campaign, launching in January 2025, will focus on predominantly Hispanic ZIP codes 85705, 85746, and 85756. PACC reports that these areas see a higher number of pets entering the shelter compared to those being adopted. Continued marketing efforts will also target South Tucson’s ZIP codes 85706 and 85713, where PACC has already served 2,705 residents with pet care essentials and provided free resources to 1,286 dogs since the campaign began.
Officials emphasize that the program is designed with culturally relevant language, graphics, and idioms to connect effectively with Spanish-speaking families. Laura O’Brien, Operations Manager for Friends of PACC, expressed concern about pets arriving at the shelter without identification. “This campaign has already made great strides in getting resources to folks who need them. We’re thrilled to partner again with County Communications to reach families in additional ZIP codes,” she noted.
Steve Kozachik, interim director of PACC, underscored the grant’s significance in enhancing community relationships, especially in previously underserved areas. The campaign has already led to monthly events in the targeted ZIP codes, providing crucial support and essential pet care items, which are vital for ensuring the safe return of lost pets.
