PACC Seizes 280 Chickens in Major Cockfighting Bust

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department recently seized 280 chickens as part of an investigation into suspected cockfighting activities. This operation took place on Monday, with the birds currently housed at the Pima Animal Care Center (PACC), according to an announcement made on Wednesday.
PACC reported that the chickens, which include 116 hens and 164 roosters, are in good health. They will remain in custody while the investigation unfolds. Additionally, four dogs were also impounded during the operation.
Officials revealed that the case began when deputies responded to a theft report on South Camino Casitas, located in the Summit neighborhood south of Tucson International Airport. Upon arrival, they found indications that the property was being used for illegal rooster fighting and breeding.
Following the collection of evidence, a search warrant was executed, leading to the rescue of the animals. Jose Balderrama, 41, was arrested on ten counts of owning roosters for the purposes of cockfighting. In Arizona, cockfighting is classified as a Class 5 felony, which can result in a prison sentence of up to 2.5 years.
PACC Director Monica Dangler expressed gratitude for the opportunity to rescue the birds, emphasizing the ongoing need for community support. She noted that PACC is currently caring for 978 animals, which complicates their capacity to provide adequate care. With 570 dogs in their facility, they are urgently seeking foster or adoptive homes.
To alleviate the situation, PACC is waiving adoption fees for all dogs. Additionally, those who adopt a dog weighing 40 pounds or more will receive a free crate and dog bed through November 10.
