New director will spearhead fundraising

Katie Thorson Wasson

The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) has appointed Katie Thorson Wasson as its new director of philanthropy. Established in 1971, AAWL stands as Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter.

“As a nonprofit organization that is fully funded by the generosity of our community, we’re thrilled to welcome Katie to spearhead our fundraising efforts,” stated Alessandra Navidad, CEO of AAWL. “Our need for funding has increased as we expand initiatives to support local pet owners in keeping their pets at home with their families.”

Recently, AAWL has experienced a significant rise in pet surrenders, a trend attributed to the soaring cost of living in Arizona. The organization emphasized that many owners are facing heartbreaking decisions due to financial hardships, including eviction and job loss.

“Historically, AAWL focused on creating kennel space for the increasing number of surrender requests. Now, we offer life-saving resources and assistance to help pet owners overcome these challenges, ensuring families stay together with their beloved pets,” the nonprofit explained.

Katie Thorson Wasson, a University of Minnesota graduate, brings over eight years of nonprofit experience. In her new role, she will oversee planning and executing fundraising initiatives to enhance the resources provided by AAWL, including a low-cost community vet clinic, on-staff social worker, and various training programs.

“As a longtime animal lover, I am thrilled to be able to help vulnerable animals in the Valley,” Thorson Wasson remarked. “The Arizona Animal Welfare League is a pillar in our community, and I look forward to helping the organization thrive.”
