Arizona House Republicans have finalized their leadership team for the upcoming term. In a recent meeting, Representative Steve Montenegro was elected as the new Speaker of the House, succeeding Ben Toma. Alongside him, Representative Michael Carbone will serve as Majority Leader, while Representative Julie Willoughby steps in as Majority Whip.
Expressing gratitude for his election, Montenegro stated, “I am deeply honored by the trust my colleagues have placed in me. Together, we have a strong mandate from Arizonans to advance policies that uphold our principles, promote economic growth, and protect the freedoms and values that define our great state. This leadership role comes with great respect, and I am determined to address the challenges ahead.”
Representative Matt Gress celebrated the new leadership on social media, highlighting Montenegro, Carbone, and Willoughby’s potential to deliver practical solutions for the state’s residents. “Let’s GOOOO!!” he added, emphasizing enthusiasm for their tenure.
In contrast to the Republican unity exhibited in the Arizona Senate, the House showcases a more fractured environment. Disputes arising from Montenegro’s election may pose challenges ahead. One state House Republican voiced concerns on X, suggesting that a unified caucus will be essential in countering Governor Katie Hobbs’ progressive initiatives during her final two years in office.
