Michael Hunter, the newly appointed chief operations officer at Christian Family Care, recently shared insights from his nearly 30-year career in government and policy during an interview with the Arizona Capitol Times. This discussion followed his departure from the role of Chief of Staff for the Arizona House of Representatives on February 14.

Hunter’s initial foray into politics began with an interest in public policy, leading him to obtain a degree in political science. His career took off after responding to a job ad in the Arizona Republic, which led him to a role at Arizona Tax Research. “My inclination to help others has always drawn me to various organizations,” he remarked, detailing his journey through different governmental roles, including positions at the Arizona Board of Regents and the state Senate under varied leadership.

When discussing his approach to policy, Hunter emphasized the significance of process over the often-overlooked elements of power and passion. “A bad process often leads to poor policy outcomes,” he noted. He stressed the need for collaboration among diverse parties to ensure that public policy works effectively for all. Hunter sees himself as an advocate for structured processes that can funnel diverse energies toward positive outcomes.

Addressing the complexities of managing differing personalities within the House, he offered a practical perspective. “Understanding colleagues’ backgrounds is vital. If you visit their districts, you may recognize their viewpoints are shaped by their local communities,” he explained. He further suggested that cultivating empathy, even through prayer, can foster respect and understanding among members.

Reflecting on the staff at the Arizona House, Hunter praised their talent and dedication. He noted that while the environment might not suit everyone, those who thrive there contribute significantly to the institution’s functionality. He expressed respect for Speaker Montenegro’s decisions regarding staffing, particularly highlighting his former deputy chief of staff as an exemplary choice.

On what defines an effective speaker, Hunter identified servant leadership as crucial. He described good speakers as those who harness the creativity and energy of their staff without prioritizing personal agendas, thereby directing the legislative body towards meaningful public policy achievements.

Hunter also underscored the importance of building relationships within the legislative framework. He treasures the personal connections cultivated over years, which have allowed members to confide and seek guidance from him. These interactions have enriched his experience, emphasizing the significance of a supportive, open environment in politics.

Looking ahead to his new position at Christian Family Care, Hunter expressed excitement about addressing family and child care needs within the modern cultural context. He aims to communicate effectively and compassionately about these issues, emphasizing the importance of wisdom and love in outreach efforts.

As he transitions into this new chapter, Hunter hopes to maintain the friendships forged during his time in government, emphasizing the continuity of personal connections despite the change in roles. “I want to ensure that I remain a familiar presence at the Capitol,” he concluded.
