Maricopa County Invests $150,000 to Propel Foster Care Kids into a Brighter Future

Maricopa County is taking significant steps to assist youth transitioning out of foster care. Recently, the Board of Supervisors approved a budget allocation of $150,000 for this initiative, directing the funds to HopeTech. This innovative program, touted as Arizona’s first of its kind, aims to combine housing, support services, and career training for foster youth at a Career Technical Education District (CTED) campus.
HopeTech will be situated at the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT), which features a new residence hall equipped with 64 beds. This facility is designed to provide essential support and stability for vulnerable youth as they navigate adulthood.
“Investing in our young people as they transition out of foster care is an investment in the future of our communities,” stated Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin. His emphasis on workforce training highlights its role in equipping youth with valuable skills for economic independence.
Dr. Chad Wilson, Superintendent of EVIT, expressed gratitude for the county’s support, describing it as crucial for offering resources that empower students to pursue their futures confidently. The backing, he noted, extends beyond financial assistance, fostering a pathway to independence for these young individuals.
According to the county’s announcement, the funding will cover essential expenses, including furniture, appliances, and transportation. This infrastructure will facilitate easier access to the expansive EVIT campus and support attendance at appointments and training sessions. Additionally, recreational facilities will be developed to promote physical activity among the residents.
Officials also express a vision for HopeTech to serve as a model for similar programs across other CTEDs in the state and nationwide, potentially transforming the support landscape for foster youth everywhere.
