Fire officials say man found dead after Mesa fire likely had mobility issues, cause of death still unknown

MESA, Ariz. — A tragic fire in Mesa on Wednesday afternoon resulted in one fatality after a mobile home went up in flames near Main Street and Alma School Road.

Emergency calls flooded in as residents reported the rapidly engulfed trailer. Witness Melissa Cole described the scene, stating, “It went from the smoke and it just, it flamed up quickly. I was yelling at the 911 operator, ‘You have to get here now,’ because it looked like it was going to start a fire into the other trailer.”

The Mesa Fire Department responded promptly, managing to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent homes.

Authorities confirmed that the deceased is believed to be the sole occupant of the mobile home. Public Information Officer Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos noted that the victim likely faced mobility challenges.

The victim’s identity has not yet been revealed, and the cause of death remains under investigation.

Neighbors have identified the resident as a man, with local resident Stephen Cooper expressing sorrow over the loss, stating, “He’s a good guy to talk to. Sad that a life was lost.” Another neighbor described him as quiet, often spending time at home with his beloved cats, calling them his “kids.”

This incident marks the second mobile home fire Mesa firefighters have attended this week. Ramirez-Ramos emphasized the critical role smoke alarms play in saving lives, encouraging residents to take advantage of free programs available throughout the Valley for smoke detector installation.

The investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing.
