Major I-10 Expansion on Tucson’s Northwest Side to Complete by 2025

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is nearing completion of the Interstate 10 widening project between Ruthrauff and Ina roads. Work is set to continue next year, focusing on widening the freeway between Kino Boulevard and Alvernon Way.
The four-mile stretch of I-10, which has been under construction since 2023, aims to expand the interstate from three to four lanes. As part of the expansion, ADOT plans to rebuild the interchanges at Orange Grove and Sunset roads, introducing two-lane entrance and exit ramps.
In a collaborative effort with Pima County, ADOT is also developing a new extension of Sunset Road to River Road. This project includes a new bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and the Rillito River, facilitating access to the Chuck Huckelberry Loop.
Starting in mid-2024, ADOT will begin rebuilding and widening I-10 from Kino Boulevard to Alvernon Way. Upon completion, the segment will feature three lanes of traffic in both directions between Alvernon and Kino, with four lanes to the west of Kino. Notably, the Palo Verde interchange will be dismantled, replaced by a new interchange at Country Club Road.
Additionally, the interchange at Kino Boulevard will undergo reconstruction. A new crossing underneath the highway will connect the north and south sides of the Kino Sports Complex, aligned with enhancements from the Mosaic Quarter project.
On Interstate 19, ADOT plans to initiate construction of a new interchange at Irvington Road in 2025. The current design phase is concluding after an October public meeting. This new interchange will provide three westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes on Irvington Road over I-19, while ensuring the structure can accommodate future widening.
The project will also feature widened on-ramps, including a partial cloverleaf ramp, along with improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. Utility relocations, drainage work, and safety enhancements on Oracle Road and Miracle Mile have recently been completed, reinforcing ADOT’s commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
