A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck California’s Mojave Desert on Monday, causing tremors felt all the way to Los Angeles. The quake occurred at 1 p.m., centered approximately 13 miles northeast of Barstow, which lies about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Officials reported that the shaking spread across a wide area of Southern California, including Los Angeles. The tremors were also felt in neighboring Las Vegas, Nevada, and Bullhead City, Arizona.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located 29 miles from Apple Valley, 34 miles from Victorville, 37 miles from Adelanto, and 41 miles from Hesperia. Remarkably, there have been no other earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater in this vicinity over the last 10 days.
