Lujan Takes the Helm at Arizona School for the Arts

David Lujan
Arizona School for the Arts (ASA) has appointed David Lujan as its new executive director, effective February. Currently the director of the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS), Lujan will transition from that role at the end of January. This leadership change is part of a planned strategy, with incumbent Head of School Leah Fregulia supporting Lujan throughout the 2024-25 school year to ensure a seamless transition.
Lujan brings extensive experience in educational leadership, having previously served as the founding chief administrator of ASU Prep Academy. He also held a seat on the Phoenix Union High School District’s board from 2002 to 2010. His career spans over two decades, focusing on child welfare and education.
“We are excited to welcome David Lujan to the Arizona School for the Arts community,” said Dr. Heidi Jannenga, board president of ASA. “David’s commitment to empowering young people and his leadership background will be invaluable as we elevate ASA as a premier institution for both academic and artistic excellence.”
Fregulia, who has led ASA for 17 years, is recognized for building the school’s reputation as a hub of artistic achievement and academic rigor. ASA provides a unique blend of educational and performing arts programs for students in grades 5–12, fostering both academic success and artistic development.
