Lifesaving Grant Reunites Lost Pets with Their Owners
In a heartening development, the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) has secured a $20,000 grant from the national nonprofit Petco Love. This funding will support AHS’s critical work in rescuing and caring for sick and injured lost pets. It will primarily cover costs related to food and medical treatment for animals awaiting reunion with their families.
AHS’s Animal Assistance team is instrumental in reuniting hundreds of lost pets with their owners annually. The Pet Reunite Program last year successfully brought over 600 lost pets back to their families. This grant will empower AHS to aid more pets like Skylar, a stray cat missing for over a decade. A Good Samaritan found Skylar and brought him to a local emergency animal clinic where he was then transferred to AHS.
Skylar’s severe matting suggested a lengthy period on the streets. However, his microchip revealed that he was adopted from AHS in 2008. His owner, Monica, had not seen him since he was lost in 2009. Upon learning of Skylar’s whereabouts, Monica and her brother rushed to AHS Papago Park Campus for an emotional reunion.
“Reuniting sick and injured lost pets with their owners is always step one and the best outcome in our effort to help both pets and people,” stated Francisco Cabello, director of Animal Assistance & Transport Programs at AHS. “This generous grant from Petco Love not only helps us make more families whole by reuniting them with their pets, but also allows us to care for more sick, injured, and abused pets that come through our doors daily.”
